  • A SongStory for Black Mama’s

here you be, dark, layers of darkness

all tumbled together in you skin, sweet.

you know darkness is creation, and called upon

the sun to serve its glory, your skin speaks that calling

    easily.

birth, life, dreams, soft laughter, sweet tears,

run and tumble in your arms your baby love to play

as you did. You miss your mama, or she’s still claiming those

    earthly kisses and hugs.

Is she gone to that place where they say ancestors speak another tongue.

Chile’ sigh. Ohh the lovely memories she left behind

claim em all, even the ones that take you under the covers

you all wrapped in the pain how could it be possible

that the belly you lived in and knew her heartbeat so intimately

first memory of life in her eyes. Still… breath… hum… did she dance sometimes

    you dance for her now.
